Artist of the Week: Anca

Name: Anca

Members: Jessie Wilson (vocals, piano, guitar, bass, percussion)

Location: Sydney, NSW, Australia

Fun Fact: Two truths and a lie: 1. I have a degree majoring in neuroscience and only started pursuing music as I was finishing uni and realised I’d chosen the wrong path 2. Anca is from the elvish language invented by J. R. R. Tolkien 3. My genre of music often isn’t the same as the music I listen to but it’s just… me! I hear it in my head and I make the sound and it just happens. Jk, they’re all true 😉

Getting to Know Anca

Q: When and where is your next performance?

December 3 – Staves Brewery (Glebe, Sydney) 7pm EP launch show

Q: Do you write your own music? What inspires you to do so?

Yes I write everything myself! I’m inspired by absolutely anything that may happen in my life not confined to love and loss. I particularly love being melodramatic and calling out people/myself for being silly.

Q: What are your favourite songs to perform? Do you do any covers?

I mainly play my own songs – favourites being Learning to Let Go, Red Flags, and The Chestnut Man, but I also love playing anything Coldplay or Ed Sheeran!

Q: What are you currently working on?

My debut EP is due for release on November 30!!! It’s a collection of the best songs I wrote before turning 21 and was recorded on a piano that has been in my family for 4 generations. The next stepping stone is releasing stuff with my adult (post 21) perspective, hoping for 2018 to be a big year for me!

Q: Are you currently signed to a record label? If not, is there one you’d like to be signed by?

I’m currently unsigned and not really looking for a label – I feel as though in the modern music industry it’s possible to do everything yourself – it may cost more and take more effort but at least I get to keep control over who I want to be as an artist.

Q: If you could meet any musician, who would it be and why?

Chris Martin – he is without a doubt my biggest inspiration as a composer and performer. That being said, if I did actually meet him I would probably die of a heart attack so maybe I should choose someone different…? haha

Q: Describe your music style in three words.

Alternative piano pop
